| Abstract: |
| Hua Luogeng was a member of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and a foreign academician in the United States and other countries. This paper expounds his determination，self-study and originality. His determination was demonstrated in his strong will to pursue his career even if he was psychically disabled. His self-study was evident in that he was self-taught and made great achievements. His originality was illustrated in his creative ideas which had a long-lasting effect. His talent，interest，achievements and outstanding views of the seven applications of mathematics can provide useful reference for understanding the role of basic sciences and cultivating talents. |
